The file manager provides a more flexible interface to manage the files in your user directory. If you are not totally familiar with how this system works, please use the Manage Site functions instead. These are more user-friendly.

The file manager has constraints on its handling of certain file types, especially SHTML and JPG files. Furthermore, the file manager will ensure that the files in your user directory are in sync with the vGalleries databases. If you manipulate your galleries or pictures through the file manager, it will automatically update the database as well. Therefore, the file manager will prevent you from performing tasks that would improperly alter your site. The tasks that you are NOT allowed to do are summarized below.

  • You cannot change the extension of a file. Sorry.
  • You can leave off the extension when you are prompted for the new file name, it will be appended automatically.
  • If you move, rename or delete a registered picture that you uploaded (a picture that is part of your gallery, as opposed to one uploaded with Upload Other Material,
  • any rename or delete will act the same as if you performed the task from the Manage Pictures page.
  • The same applies of you rename or delete one of your galleries.
  • Operations on your galleries are the same as if you used Manage Galleries.
  • You cannot move a gallery.
  • You can copy a gallery, but not into a subdirectory, because gallery files must reside in your home directory.
  • You are not allowed to copy a registered picture or its thumbnail.
  • You may move a registered picture to another directory, and the thumbnail will move automatically with it.
  • A registered picture must reside in a subdirectory directly below your home directory.
  • You are not allowed to delete the thumbnail of a registered picture. If you delete the registered picture itself, the thumbnail will be deleted as well.
  • You may upload other HTML and image files, but not SHTML or JSP files.
  • All other uploads (i.e. other than registering new pictures) must go into your home-directory, not into a subdirectory.
